Observations of the moon, star clusters, and perhaps other galaxies are possible. Sorenson will set up on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 and both Friday and Saturday evenings with explanation and assistance from resident astronomy buff Drew Sorenson. Weather permitting, telescopes will be set up at nightfall, approximately 9:00 p.m. on the south side of Hy-Vee Drugstore, directly on Lincolnway. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary, so what actually will be seen is unknown.
A hobby since 1965, Sorenson was introduced to astronomy during George Kundrat’s 7th grade science class, and his observation of the spectacular Ikeya-Seki Comet that year cinched his fascination for the science. Sorenson recommends stargazers dress warmly, and keep flashlights pointed down or covered with tape during this free event.
